Paul Smith Begins Appointment as President of St. Elizabeth's Medical Center

Smith takes over for Marisela Marrero, who now serves as SVP for Health Care Equity across Steward Health Care’s system

BOSTON, MA – Paul Smith officially began his appointment today as President of Steward St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center (SEMC) in Boston. He is replacing Dr. Marisela Marrero, who now serves as Senior Vice President for Health Care Equity and Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion across Steward’s national health system.

Smith had previously spent seven years at Steward, beginning in 2014 as the Senior Director for Surgical Services at SEMC. He then took on the role of Vice President of Operations at Steward’s Holy Family Hospital in Methuen before returning to SEMC in 2019 as Chief Operating Officer. During his tenure as COO, he helped lead the organization’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic and drove the successful completion of numerous capital projects across the campus.  Smith returns to Steward from Tenet Health Care system where he served as the Chief Operating Officer for Saint Vincent Hospital and Tenet’s Massachusetts market. He is a graduate of Saint Anselm College in Manchester, NH, where he received a BA in Computer Science. He continued his education at the University of Massachusetts – Lowell, where he received a MS in Healthcare Management.

“I am thrilled to return to Saint Elizabeth’s to serve as President,” said Smith. “During my previous tenure as COO, I witnessed the unique spirit of collaboration and cooperation between SEMC’s staff during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic to take care of not only our patients but also each other. Saint Elizabeth’s is a special place with incredible physician talent and cutting-edge care for patients right in the Brighton community. As someone who was born and raised in Massachusetts, I’m looking forward to working alongside our talented team to provide the highest quality care for years to come.”

“We are delighted that Paul is re-joining the Steward family,” said Dr. Mark Girard, President of Steward’s North Region. “Paul has exceptional operating skills, intimately understands our model of value-based care, and has been a respected colleague for years. He will have a big impact on SEMC as it moves toward becoming an advanced tertiary care institution.”
