St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center Welcomes Expert Orthopedic Trauma Surgeons

Dr. Malcolm Smith, an internationally renowned orthopedic surgeon, and Dr. Amna Diwan to lead orthopedic trauma care.

(BRIGHTON, MA) - St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center and Steward Medical Group are pleased to welcome internationally recognized orthopedist Malcolm Smith, MB.ChB, MD, FRCS(Glas), FRCS and Amna Diwan, MD, to the Department of Orthopedics at St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center to provide Trauma Care throughout the region. Drs. Smith and Diwan will see patients at St. Elizabeth’s and will also have a clinic based at Nashoba Valley Medical Center in Ayer.

Dr. Smith is a board-certified, internationally recognized specialist orthopaedic traumatologist, one of the pioneers in the field in the United Kingdom before he moved to the U.S. He has worked almost exclusively in academic medicine, taught widely, locally, regionally, nationally, and internationally, and has a major clinical practice in a high-level major referral center for both primary and secondary trauma. He completed his orthopaedic training as lecturer in Oxford, England, which included a fellowship year at Boston Children’s Hospital. He was accredited in Orthopaedics by the Royal College of Surgeons of England in 1991. Dr. Smith was recruited by the Harvard Department of Orthopaedic Surgery in July 2001 to be Chief of the Orthopaedic Trauma Surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital and appointed Associate Professor in Orthopaedics at Harvard Medical School in 2002. He was appointed at the University of Massachusetts as Professor in 2021.

Dr. Diwan has been an assistant professor of Orthopedic Surgery since 2015 and is the President Elect of the Massachusetts Orthopedic Association where she has served as a board member since 2018. She earned her medical degree from Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas, and completed her residency through the Harvard Combined Orthopedic Surgery Residency Program and completed her Orthopedic Surgery Trauma Fellowship at Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis Minnesota. She is currently studying for her MBA.

Dr. Smith and Dr. Diwan are widely published. Dr. Smith also has a significant interest in international relief surgery being one of the primary responders to the Haitian earthquake in 2010 and having ongoing links in South America and Africa.
