Gastroenterologist Syed Kashif Mahmood, MD, MPH, Joins the SMG Digestive Disease Center at St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center

Brighton, MA – St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center and Steward Medical Group (SMG) welcome Interventional Gastroenterologist Syed Kashif Mahmood, MD, MPH, to the medical staff.

Board-certified in Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology, Dr. Mahmood brings a breadth of experience in the gastroenterology space, particularly in the use of minimally invasive endoscopic interventions to manage gastrointestinal diseases. Dr. Mahmood’s expertise includes endoscopic ultrasound (EUS), endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP), third space endoscopy [endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) and per-oral endoscopic myotomy (POEM)], radio frequency ablation (RFA), use of enteral stents, and advanced polyp resection including endoscopic full thickness resection (EFTR). 

In addition to his clinical role, Dr. Mahmood will also serve as Physician Liaison for Advanced Endoscopy Services for Steward Health Care in Massachusetts, working collaboratively with key stakeholders within the healthcare network to optimize care coordination for advanced endoscopy.

Dr. Mahmood previously served as Chair of Gastroenterology at the Garnet Health Medical Center in Middletown, NY, and as interventional gastroenterologist at Crystal Run Healthcare, LLP. A graduate of Santosh Medical College in Ghaziabad, India, Dr. Mahmood completed a residency in internal medicine at the Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, OH. He worked as an academic hospitalist at Massachusetts General Hospital before completing a fellowship in gastroenterology at Lahey Health in Burlington, Mass., followed by fellowship in advanced endoscopy at the University of Massachusetts Memorial Health System in Worcester, Mass. Dr. Mahmood also holds a Master of Public Heath (MPH) from the Harvard T. H. Chan School of Public Health, concentrating in Health Care Management and Policy. Dr. Mahmood is an active member of the American Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy and has a vested interest in process improvement and quality of care.
