James Terwilliger Joins St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center as President

Terwilliger HeadshotBrighton, MA – James (Jim) Terwilliger has been named President of St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center. Terwilliger joins St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center (SEMC) team from Dana-Farber Cancer Institute (DFCI), where he most recently served as executive vice president and chief operating officer. 

Over the course of his career, Terwilliger has demonstrated a pattern of streamlining executive and operational functions to increase satisfaction, productivity, and financial performance. While at DFCI, he innovated the system’s operating model that resulted in increased clinical productivity. His process-driven approach leans heavily on a model of transparency around organizational priorities and accountability that ultimately improved employee experience and reduced costs of care.

Terwilliger’s depth of expertise includes operational success, patient and employee experience, and partnership development, honed through his experience in leadership roles at complex medical institutions such as Montefiore Health System. In his tenure at Montefiore Health System, he drove the development of a clinical integration model with 400 medical doctor community partner organizations that resulted in significant referrals to the system. He also has held key leadership roles at esteemed academic medical institutions such as Indiana University Health Methodist and University Hospitals, University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, USC University Hospital, and UCLA Health System.

Terwilliger graduated from the Executive Healthcare Management Program at the University of Pennsylvania Wharton School and holds a master’s degree in public health from University of California Los Angeles. He was also named a Hoosier Fellow at Indiana University’s Kelly School of Business Tobias Center for Leadership.
