St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center Introduces Robotic Arm Technology to Improve Accuracy in Joint Replacements

Mako Robotic-Arm Assisted Technology can lead to better outcomes in hip and knee replacement surgeries

BRIGHTON, MA – St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center has introduced Mako Robotic-Arm Assisted Technology to its Bone and Joint Center. This new technology uses GPS and 3-D modeling to improve the accuracy and longevity of joint replacements. Now operating in two units at the Center, Mako technology enables St. Elizabeth’s to offer total knee replacement, partial knee replacement, and total hip replacement surgeries to more patients than before.

Developed by the medical technology company Stryker, Mako Robotic-Arm Assisted Technology allows surgeons to operate with a higher level of precision than traditional joint replacement techniques. The robotic arm allows for better positioning of implants and a greater ability to make intra-operative adjustments. Mako technology hold promise for lower readmission rates and improved longevity of implants.

According to Thomas Gill, MD, Chairman of St. Elizabeth’s Orthopedic Department, “We are excited to offer this new technology at the Bone and Joint Center. This innovative approach to joint replacement allows our surgeons to better customize their procedures to their unique needs of our patients.” Because Mako Robotic-Arm Assisted Technology offers increased accuracy and precision, “we can provide far better outcomes for all of our patients who need a hip or knee replacement,” Gill says.

At St. Elizabeth’s Bone and Joint Center, total knee, partial knee, and total hip replacements using the Mako technology are performed by Matthew Werger, MD and Jonathan Cluett, MD. Both doctors are board-certified orthopedic surgeons with extensive training and experience in traditional and robotic techniques.
