St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center, a Tufts University School of Medicine teaching hospital and member of Steward Health Care, the largest fully integrated community care organization and community hospital network in New England, is the proud recipient of the Allston-Brighton Adult Education Coalition Certificate of Recognition which honors the programs and community service St. Elizabeth’s provides to the Allston-Brighton communities. The Coalition is concerned with adult literacy and is art of the Boston Adult Literacy Initiative (ALI) which receives funding from the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education and the city of Boston to provide adult education services.

“The Boston College Neighborhood Center and the Allston Brighton Adult Education Coalition are grateful to St. Elizabeth’s for its contributions to the Allston-Brighton community and in particular the families and individuals who participate in the Allston Brighton Adult Education programs,” said Maria DiChiappari, director of the Boston College Neighborhood Center.

Sheila O’Connell, director of Community Partnerships at St. Elizabeth’s, said the hospital is honored to be recognized by the coalition and shares its goals to help support our diverse local community. “As a community teaching hospital, more than 25 percent of St. Elizabeth’s patients speak a primary language other than English,” said O’Connell. “St. Elizabeth’s has a rich history of working with our local immigrant and adult populations, whether it’s offering ESOL classes for our employees, childbirth education classes for Portuguese speakers, free health and wellness screenings, employing several on-site interpreters to work with our culturally diverse patient population or the annual scholarships we provide to Allston-Brighton residents pursing health degrees.”

In addition, in 2011 St. Elizabeth’s had more than 59,000 interpreter encounters and recently made a significant investment in their community by purchasing more than 40 wireless Interpreter Phone on a poles to better serve diverse patient populations.
