Respiratory Therapy and Pulmonary Function Testing

St. Elizabeth’s provides sophisticated pulmonary function testing to work-up respiratory illnesses and to determine whether ongoing therapies are effective.

Tests and procedures performed at St. Elizabeth’s include:

  • Arterial blood gas
  • Pulse oximetry at rest and with exertion to determine supplemental oxygen needs
  • Cardiopulmonary exercise testing
  • Lung volume measurements
  • Methacholine challenge testing to evaluate asthma
  • Respiratory muscle forces
  • Diffusion capacity (DLCO)
  • Spirometry (pre- and post-bronchodilator)

These tests are used to determine whether patients have disorders of their respiratory system. They are extremely helpful when evaluating symptoms of shortness of breath and cough.
