Stroke Services

Director, Judith A. Hinchey, M.

As a renowned pioneer and leader in stroke prevention and treatment, St. Elizabeth’s sets the standard for stroke care excellence in Massachusetts and nationwide. Our hospital is the only nationally recognized Primary Stroke Center in Massachusetts. We also are designated a primary stroke service by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health.

Our coordinated emergency treatment and in-hospital care have an outstanding record. In fact, the CDC (US Centers for Disease Control) has verified that at St. Elizabeth’s:

  • All eligible ischemic stroke patients receive tPA "clot busting" treatment within two hours of arrival;
  • All eligible patients receive anti-platelet agents within 48 hours of admission to the Emergency Department;
  • We routinely screen for swallowing trouble. This helps us prevent pneumonias; and,
  • We apply prophylaxis for deep vein thrombosis (DVT), and provide in-depth stroke education to all our patients.

Our superb stroke specialists are all board-certified faculty members of the Tufts University School of Medicine. These neurologists, neuroradiologists, neurosurgeons, vascular surgeons and interventional cardiologists provide rapid diagnosis and life-saving treatment 24 hours a day. Through their involvement in multiple clinical trials, including trials to limit the size of the stroke and to prevent stroke recurrence, they provide St. Elizabeth’s patients with access to the latest in stroke prevention and treatment.

Specialized nurses staff our neurology inpatient service, which has one of very few dedicated step-down neurology units in New England. The unit provides an exceptionally high level of nursing care for clinically unstable patients.

Advanced treatments
St. Elizabeth’s was one of the first Boston medical centers to insert stents into the carotid arteries to reduce the occurrence and complications of stroke. We continue to offer advanced treatments to limit stroke damage including:

  • Thrombolytic therapy to treat acute ischemic strokes
  • Acute management of subarachnoid hemorrhage
  • Emergency carotid endarterectomy, stenting and angioplasty
  • Neurointerventional techniques to treat large strokes

All services are carried out with personalized attention and compassion in state-of-the-art facilities on our conveniently located Boston campus. Affordable valet parking for patients and ample low-cost parking for visitors are available.
