Dr. Stephen Gutting handles some of Boston's most complex neurosurgical cases.
St. Elizabeth’s highly skilled neurosurgeons work closely with patients, families and our multidisciplinary neuroscience team in providing some of the most advanced brain, spinal and peripheral nerve procedures available anywhere.
These outstanding neurosurgeons, all board-certified faculty members of the Tufts University School of Medicine, play an active role in St. Elizabeth’s Neuroscience and Spine Centers, which offer coordinated diagnosis and care.
Our neurosurgeons are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for emergencies, transfers and in-patient consultation. A rapid response system provides timely access for patient evaluation and collaboration with St. Elizabeth’s neurologists and psychiatrists to determine the best treatment options. The team takes a compassionate, patient-centric approach in helping individuals decide among options, and in carrying out subsequent treatment. They are also committed to providing timely feedback to patients, families and referring physicians.
Treatment and Specialized Facilities
Working in modern operating rooms equipped with the latest technology, the team performs complex, sophisticated procedures in a variety of treatment specialties. Patients with critical care needs are treated and monitored in St. Elizabeth’s dedicated Neurology or Neuro Step-Down Units. Staffed by caring and knowledgeable neurology nurses, such specialized neurology units are rarely found in other Boston hospitals.
Our neurosurgeons carry out clinical trials, research Parkinson’s disease and develop new instruments, products and procedures, thus providing our patients with treatment opportunities not readily available elsewhere. In fact, some Parkinson’s patients travel across the country to be treated with St. Elizabeth’s unique sequencing approach to deep brain stimulation.
