Myasthenia Gravis Center

St. Elizabeth’ operates one of Massachusetts’ largest centers devoted to the diagnosis and treatment of myasthenia gravis.  Led by a nationally known myasthenia gravis expert who has been named a Boston Magazine top doctor, the center provides state-of-the art, individualized care with the compassion for which this hospital is known.

Diagnosis
St. Elizabeth’s neurologists, all board-certified faculty members of the Tufts University School of Medicine, evaluate patients in a state-of-the-art neurophysiology laboratory using well-established techniques and advanced systems not widely available. 

Thorough myasthenia gravis evaluations at St. Elizabeth’s include the following:

  • Brainstem and orbital MRI scans

  • Chest CT scan

  • Edrophonium (Tensilon) test

  • Multiple acetylcholine receptor antibody and antistriational muscle antibody level tests

  • Nerve conduction studies

  • Repetitive motor nerve stimulation

  • Single fiber electromyography (EMG)

  • Thyroid function test

Treatment
After diagnosis, St. Elizabeth’s experienced myasthenia gravis specialists offer their patients the best available course of treatment. Whether it’s medications to improve strength, therapies that suppress the autoimmune response responsible for the disorder, or surgery, world class cutting edge treatment is available at our conveniently located Boston campus.

Short-term immunosuppressant therapy is carried out in St. Elizabeth’s large, state-of-the art Plasma Exchange (Apheresis) Center. Surgical procedures take place in St. Elizabeth’s new, specially equipped operating suite.

Caring Experts
Our myasthenia gravis experts are dedicated to working closely with patients, families and referring physicians with the goal of making the best possible diagnostic and treatment decisions. These caring experts are actively involved in myasthenia gravis clinical trials, which they publish and present. They also train medical students and neurology residents and take an active role in community education.
