Memory Disorders Clinic

St. Elizabeth’s offers a full complement of diagnostic, treatment and management services for patients with memory disorders. These range from mild impairment to difficult-to-diagnose, unusual or complex conditions.

Our multidisciplinary team includes specialists in neurology, psychiatry, brain imaging, neuropsychology, neurosurgery and social work. They provide leading-edge diagnosis, medical care and support with the compassion and caring for which this hospital is well known. The memory disorders team also collaborates with referring physicians and families to help patients reach the highest level of functioning possible.

Expert Diagnosis and Treatment

Accurate diagnosis is key to optimal treatment. In addition to thorough clinical and neurocognitive evaluation, we provide expert analysis of state-of-the-art diagnostic tests performed with the latest technologies such as PET scanning (positron emission tomography), MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) and SPECT. Elective in-patient evaluations and psychiatric monitoring are provided in special instances, as are procedures including brain biopsy and cerebrospinal fluid shunting. Genetic testing and counseling may be recommended.

Our doctors are all board-certified faculty members of the Tufts University School of Medicine who conduct basic or clinical research. They regularly diagnose and treat:

  • Alzheimer’s disease
  • Lewy Body/Parkinson’s diseases
  • Frontotemporal dementia
  • Head trauma
  • Mild cognitive impairment (MCI)
  • Multi Infarct dementia (strokes)
  • Normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH)
  • Neuropsychiatric disorders
  • Other less common dementias

Treatment options include medications and sometimes surgery or other cognitive-based therapy.

Support and referrals

In keeping with St. Elizabeth’s patient-focused care, the Memory Disorders Clinic staff spends as much time as is needed in guiding patients and their families through evaluation and therapy, in answering questions, and in long-term follow up. Our social workers can provide referrals for services, including determining whether it is safe for patients to drive and finding residences for patients who can no longer be cared for at home.

The clinic is closely affiliated with St. Elizabeth’s distinguished neuroscience research group, which focuses on the basic mechanisms of neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s in order to discover targets for new drugs.

Convenient valet and low-cost garage parking are available for our patients and visitors.
