Evoked Responses Tests – Patient Information

  • Brainstem Auditory Evoked Response (BAER)

To begin the test, you will be asked to lie down. A set of small metal discs will be placed on the skin of your scalp and a set of earphones will be placed over your ears. In one ear you will hear a loud clicking noise and in the other ear you will hear a static-like noise. When sufficient information has been recorded the electrodes will be removed and the gel cleaned from your scalp.

This test may take up to an hour and is painless.

  • Somatosensory Evoked Responses in the arm (Median)

Aset of small metal discs will be placed on the skin of your scalp and on your neck. A stimulator is then secured to your wrist. You will feel a tingling, tapping sensation similar to “hitting your funny bone.” Both arms will be tested in this manner. When sufficient information has been recorded the electrodes will be removed and the gel cleaned from your scalp.

This test may take up to an hour and is nearly painless.

  • Somatosensory Evoked Responses in the leg (Tibial)

A set of small metal discs will be placed on the skin of your scalp, back, knee and hip. A stimulator is then secured to your ankle. You will feel a tingling, tapping sensation similar to “hitting your funny bone.” Both legs will be tested in this manner. When sufficient information has been recorded the electrodes will be removed and the gel cleaned off.

This test may take up to an hour and is nearly painless.

  • Visual Evoked Response (VER)

A set of small metal discs will be placed on the skin of your scalp. One eye will be covered and you will be instructed to watch a monitor. A shifting checkerboard pattern will be seen. When sufficient information has been recorded, the other eye will be covered and tested in the same manner.

This test may take up to an hour and is painless.
