Diagnosis and Testing: Neurophysiology Center

Neuromuscular diseases often present with a variety of complicated symptoms and examination abnormalities that have many potential causes. For that reason they can be difficult to diagnose.

In St. Elizabeth’s state-of-the art neurophysiology laboratory, specialists who are among the most experienced in New England employ the latest diagnostic and testing tools, many of which are available only in select academic medical centers. These tools include:

  • Autonomic testing
  • Brainstem evoked responses
  • Electroencephalograms (EEG)
  • Electromyography (EMG)
  • Nerve conduction studies (NCS)
  • Quantitative Sensory Testing (QST: CASE IV system)
  • Single fiber electromyography (SF-EMG)
  • Somatosensory evoked responses
  • Visual evoked responses

We are particularly well known for testing and diagnosing such complex neuromuscular conditions as myasthenia gravis, Guillain-Barré syndrome, chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy, ALS and a variety of other peripheral nerve, neuromuscular junction and muscle diseases.

Precise diagnosis is critical for determining the best course of treatment.
