Protection From the Elements – Your Best Defense

Skin is the largest organ of the body and also the one most exposed to the elements.  As such, it is vulnerable to injuries, rashes, infections, burns and damage by environmental elements.

Dermatologists can treat all manner of skin disorders, but the most effective step to keeping skin healthy, is protecting it. The ultraviolet rays of the sun do irreparable damage on skin.  Protecting the skin from the sun is essential to preventing skin cancer and the most effective way to keep your skin healthy.  Protective steps include:

  • Avoid the sun, especially during the middle of the day
  • Wear sunscreen with sun protective factor (SPF) 15 or higher, year-round
  • Wear protective clothing
  • Wear a hat with a wide brim to shade the face, head, ears and neck
  • Wear sunglasses that wrap around and block as close to 100 percent of both UVA and UVB rays as possible
  • Avoid tanning beds.
  • Be aware of sun-sensitizing medications
  • Check your skin regularly and report changes to your doctor

There are many common skin disorders that require the clinical care of a physician or other healthcare professional.  Steward® dermatologists treat a variety of skin disorders including:
